We have had a winter of many passings among our LHYC family, including members who had been with us for
much of our 102 years. Here is a summary of the most recent:
-
Honorary Member Carol Prudden Dinkel:
Carol passed away on March 12. Carol had been associated with
LHYC for almost all of her ninety-two years. Her father was one of
two members to begin the E-Scow fleet, and Carol was seen over the years
in almost every sailboat from E-Scows to Sunfish. Those of us who
knew her would glance over our shoulder every July 4 until very recently
to find Carol in a motorboat watching the race named in memory of her
father. Carol was also involved in the Womens Auxiliary from its
early years, as well as many other aspects of the club. She is
survived by her children Dan, Linda, and Marti, as well as six
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
-
Past Commodore C. Frederick Paulson:
Fred passed away recently after a short illness. Fred had been a
member of the club for over 40 years, and a Thistle sailor for many of
those years.
Over the years Fred was an extremely
active member of the Club. Prior to, during, and well after his years as
Commodore, he was involved in all aspects of Club operations. He and
his wife Jean have always been involved in the social events at the club,
but Fred was also a Junior Advisor many years ago. He joined in
every LHYC production. And for many many years he gathered his swing
band "The Elusive Eleven" at the club for an annual performance. But
Fred was also one of those who fixed what needed to be fixed, whether a
paint brush, hammer, or his great intellect was needed. In recent
years his counsel and perspective were sought by both the commodores and
the members of the Board. Fred is survived by his wife Jean,
his children Carl, Bill, Ann, Joan, Peter, and Susan, and his many
grandchildren. Donations are being
accepted in Commodore Paulson's memory for the following: Princeton Class
of 1945, 19 Pocono Rd., Apt.112 – O, Denville, NJ 07834
-
Dorothy Flood: Dot
Flood passed away January 28, following a series of illnesses. Dot
and her husband Pete, who passed away a few years ago, were fixtures at LHYC
for well over fifty years. We will always remember Dot for her serene
smile, often in the midst of total chaos, whether it be a heated rules
debate, a major regatta, or kids running in every direction. Without
her presence, Sunday mornings on the patio will be missing something
this summer.
We offer our sympathies to her children
Matt, Christine, Kevin and Robin and her many grandchildren who we see
carrying on the Flood tradition in boats at LHYC and around the
country.
-
Past Commodore Harry Reese: From the moment Harry first joined the
Club, Harry was very much a volunteer in the true tradition of LHYC.
Before, during, and after the season, he was always involved in some
activity, or some repair, and he enjoyed it all. We will remember Harry
as much for the paintbrush or hammer in his hand as we will in his
uniform. It is not an understatement to say that
the vision, energy, and quiet leadership of Harry Reese is why the Club is
as successful as it is today. As Treasurer, Harry worked innumerable
hours to put the Club on solid financial footing. As Vice Commodore,
Harry had the vision and provided the leadership that resulted in the
patio on the east side of the clubhouse, among many other needed
improvements. As Commodore, that vision and leadership once again built
the consensus and led to the funding of the Mahan property purchase. Many
of the major physical changes to the club over recent years were a result
of his vision and leadership. But more importantly was the spirit with
which he accomplished these feats. Harry was a quiet consensus builder.
He listened, and in a very positive way moved everyone towards a common
goal. Therefore, it is not only his accomplishments, but how he
accomplished them, for which he will always be fondly remembered, and for
which the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club will always be eternally grateful.
Harry is survived by Lil and their four children, Cliff, Liz, Mike, and
Pete, and their grandchildren.
Memorials may made in Harry's memory to the Lake Hopatcong Rotary Club,
c/o Stanley Stronski, 218 Main Street, Ledgewood, NJ 07852, or the
American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603-9983.
