Junior Sailing and Swimming Instruction
The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club has a number of sailing and swimming instructional programs for children. We also sponsor sailing seminars each summer for adults.
The club is very proud that several state and national champions, several collegiate All-Americans, and the 1993 Mallory Cup Champions (US SAILING national one-design championship) were introduced to sailing at LHYC and continue to support our sailing program. But we are just as proud of the many students who have simply made life-long friends and learned a life-long skill through our sailing and swimming programs.
The sailing program is offered to members and friends of members. Lessons generally run from the last week in June to the third week in August. The program is intended to instruct at all levels of interest and ability. For example, we have many beginners as young as seven, but a huge hit over the last several years has been a beginning sailing class for teenagers. We have racing classes, but also have classes for those who do not wish to be competitive. The program also features a Saturday morning program for member children at the beginner and intermediate level. Sailing is taught using club and member-owned Optimist Sailing Dinghies, with older children using their own Lasers. Safety is emphasized at every level. A participant must be a competent swimmer. All students are also required to wear a "lifejacket" at all times.
Swimming is intended as an infant and pre-racing program for young children, with an emphasis on safety in and around the water. Swimming lessons are also offered to members and friends of members. Lessons are taught by certified professional instructors in a sandy swimming area in front of the club.
